The Psychiatric Salad Bar is a knife in the heart, and a poke at your funny bone. It chronicles my best efforts to help my high functioning autistic son, Jack who seemed to work the DSM - IV (the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition) schedule like a salad bar choosing a little bit here (Aspergers), some of that over there (ADHD) and some of that (Mood disorder NOS) too. In the early years tackling small pieces, one by one, seemed to meet with some success. But for some bizarre reason I felt that I had paid it forward and should be rewarded with a cruise through the teen age years. Au contraire.
Instead, the challenges have increased by an order of magnitude, and I find myself self medicating in the extreme. Apparently one night while failing to recalibrate my adult beverages intake, I hit the “friend” button on Facebook and with no recollection of having done so, reconnected with a daughter from my distant past.
Through an exchange of emails we learn about each other and we learn more about the struggles with Jack. This reconciliation represents the possibility of an island of normalcy in what otherwise appears to be bizzaro world. As I attend conferences, I continue to be amazed at how many other moms and dads have had experiences which are eerily like my own.
The intersection of Facebook, autism, alcoholism and the quest for normalcy make for one helluva trip. This is not a book about experts, pundits, theorists positing the latest flavor of the month, “How to book….”. This is boots on the ground, and grunts like me trying their best to help a son or daughter and to somehow survive.

The Psychiatric Salad Bar Adventures in Autism and Alternative Realities eBook SQ Adams
This book is a strange but heartfelt story. There's no false emotions here, or manipulation of the reader for the sake of effect. Just a very real account of the twists & turns in this relationship between a father and his autistic son, Jack, over years of personal discovery.I loved the way the author pulls you back in time and memory to witness the 'reasons' or the 'causes' that lead to the 'now'. Without giving too much away...the second story plot about a long lost daughter from the father's past was a hopeful distraction from the skewed view of Jack's world & behavior and it lead me wanting more & more. I couldn't put this book down. There's times of pure and creative amusement as well as an innate understanding of personal survival. This book has it all!
I thought the book was well written with a unique style and the author manages to capture the 'fragile' in all of us. I would love to read more from this writer. It's unfortunate that the first reviewer got caught up in the editing issues instead of the content of the story. They lost out on the adventure. I Very highly recommend this read.

The Psychiatric Salad Bar Adventures in Autism and Alternative Realities eBook SQ Adams Reviews
This first book really needs an editor. Mistakes and disorganization made a mess of what could have been a great story. I'd love to see an edited version.
This look at family life "Behind the Lines" of Autism was written with insight, humor, and a clever use of language. A good read. FF
This was a quick read. It kept my interest and was engaging. The juxtaposition of re-connecting with one child and surviving the other was an effective technique. I found myself wishing for more and the end, as there really wan't enough closure (life is like that, though). I'd recommend the book for anyone with children (whether on the spectrum or not). Looking forward to the sequel.
